Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly the first century AD, and the commune that grew up in the vicinity of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main instigators were later put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered serious decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industry closed down, but it is still a thriving and blooming town today, primarily due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus its excellent road and rail connections.

Chelmsford lies near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
