The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the town which expanded surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading agitators were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless presumed witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, making such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its manufacturing plants shut down, though it is still a successful and developing town today, predominantly because of its proximity to London, and its superb rail and road communications.

The town is positioned near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
