The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of roughly 110,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the village which grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were accordingly executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the 1980's, since much of its production facilities closed, yet it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, largely due to its close proximity to London, and its excellent road and rail communications.
