Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately 32 mls from the city of London. The town boasts a population of roughly 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

A Saxon community superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were later executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many supposed witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit a number of times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industrial facilities went bust, though it is still a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to the nearness to the capital, plus the superb rail and road communications.
