Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the village that developed in the vicinity of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were later executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many presumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industries closed down, even so it is still a successful and booming town today, mainly because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the exceptional rail and road links.

Chelmsford is located just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
