A Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were thereafter hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous assumed witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a serious manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry closed, even so it remains a flourishing and booming town today, predominantly due to the closeness to the city of london, plus its exceptional road and rail connections.
