River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck many times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry closed down, but it is still a flourishing and developing town today, for the most part due to its proximity to London, plus its exceptional rail and road communications.

The town sits adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
