Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of around 111,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the commune which grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck a few times.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its factories shut down, even so it remains a thriving and booming town today, principally due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the superb road and rail connections.

Chelmsford sits beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
