River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the encampment that grew up in the locality of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main agitators were consequently executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous assumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a vital industrial town during the 19th C, making products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the 1980's, since a high percentage of its production facilities closed, though it still is a successful and booming town today, largely because of its proximity to London, plus its terrific road and rail connections.
