It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the encampment which developed around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many alleged witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, principally due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus its quality road and rail communications.

The town can be found close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some twenty six km from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
