Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the encampment which developed in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading instigators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town in the 19th C, crafting such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its manufacturers closed, though it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, mainly due to its nearness to London, and the first class rail and road links.

The town stands adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
