Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of some 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the community that grew up round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were later executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless alleged witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town in the 19th century, making items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its manufacturing facilities closed down, though it still is a successful and booming town today, mostly because of its closeness to the city of london, and its terrific road and rail connections.
