Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the community that grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into significant decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry closed, though it remains a successful and booming town today, principally due to its proximity to the city of london, plus its excellent rail and road communications.

Chelmsford can be found just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six kilometres car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London.
