The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from central London. The town has a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were subsequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th century, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck several times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its factories ceased to be profitable, although it still is a successful and blooming town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to the capital, plus its first rate rail and road communications.
