Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 111,500 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading instigators were thereafter executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it remains a thriving and booming town today, largely due to the closeness to London, plus its exceptional road and rail communications.
