Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, about thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous presumed witches.
