Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in about the first century AD, and the community that grew up in the locality of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading culprits were accordingly executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, mostly due to the closeness to the city of london, plus its superb road and rail connections.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
