The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the commune that grew up in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town during the 19th century, making such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry went bust, even so it remains a successful and growing town today, mostly due to its closeness to London, plus its excellent road and rail communications.

The town is found near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
