Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the community that evolved round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town in the 19th century, making items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit several times.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline during the 1980's, since a good deal of its plants closed down, though it is still a flourishing and growing town today, mainly due to its closeness to the city of london, plus its superb rail and road communications.
