The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of about 111,500 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.
