Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly 110,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the community which evolved round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck a few times.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, nonetheless it is still a successful and blooming town today, principally because of its close proximity to the capital, and its terrific road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
