Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the encampment which expanded round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main instigators were later executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many assumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a serious manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was hit a few times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry went bust, however it is still a thriving and growing town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the first class rail and road communications.

The town is situated adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
