Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,500 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the village that expanded round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were consequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many assumed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industries closed down, even so it is still a thriving and developing town today, mostly due to the proximity to the capital, and its good road and rail connections.

The town is positioned beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some sixteen miles from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
