The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into serious decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industries closed, though it still is a thriving and expanding town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to London, and its first rate road and rail communications.
