Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of approximately 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the community which developed round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless alleged witches.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry closed down, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, largely due to the closeness to the city of london, and its outstanding road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is situated near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around twenty six km from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
