The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the town which grew up in the locality of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its industry shut down, however it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, primarily due to its nearness to the capital, and the exceptional rail and road communications.

Chelmsford sits adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
