The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of around thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of around 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the town that expanded round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main instigators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many alleged witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industries ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a thriving and growing town today, largely due to the close proximity to the city of london, and its superb road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is positioned beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
