Chelmsford is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the village that grew up in the area of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the people of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was hit several times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its factories closed, although it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, predominantly due to its closeness to London, plus its first rate rail and road communications.
