The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.
