The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, around 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the community which developed round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading culprits were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless supposed witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industrial facilities closed, even so it still is a thriving and booming town today, largely due to the nearness to the capital, and its exceptional road and rail connections.

The town is situated close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some sixteen miles from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
