Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, about 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the town which grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were consequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, making goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a successful and booming town today, principally because of its nearness to London, plus the outstanding rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is positioned beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly twenty six km from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
