The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of roughly thirty two miles from central London. The town has a population of around 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.
