River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the settlement which grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were later hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a serious manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into considerable decline during the 1980's, when a good deal of its plants closed, though it remains a flourishing and booming town today, predominantly due to the proximity to the capital, plus the outstanding rail and road communications.
