Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading culprits were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its industrial facilities closed down, all the same it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, primarily because of its nearness to the city of london, plus the good road and rail communications.
