Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were consequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a significant industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit many times.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its production facilities closed down, though it still is a thriving and growing town today, largely due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus its excellent rail and road communications.

The town is positioned beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
