The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the settlement which grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, making goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the 1980's, as much of its industry closed down, even so it is still a flourishing and developing town today, principally because of its closeness to London, plus the quality road and rail communications.
