It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the town which grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many presumed witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a significant industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its manufacturers shut down, though it remains a flourishing and booming town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus its first rate road and rail communications.

Chelmsford stands just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
