Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the village that grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were consequently executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many assumed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a significant manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit several times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry shut down, though it remains a thriving and expanding town today, principally because of its nearness to the city of london, and its quality road and rail communications.

The town is positioned just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
