The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of some 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the village that expanded around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous assumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit several times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry shut down, nevertheless it is still a thriving and developing town today, primarily because of its proximity to London, plus the excellent rail and road communications.
