The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, about thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has got a populace of some 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the town that grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were accordingly put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its production facilities shut down, even so it continues to be a successful and booming town today, principally because of its close proximity to the city of london, and its exceptional rail and road links.
