Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a drive of about 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of some 110,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the community that developed in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the occupants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it is still a thriving and expanding town today, mainly because of its nearness to the city of london, plus its outstanding rail and road links.

Chelmsford is set adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about sixteen miles from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
