The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading instigators were ultimately hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town in the 19th century, producing goods such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was hit a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry closed, in spite of this it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, for the most part due to the closeness to the city of london, and its superb road and rail links.

Chelmsford is positioned close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 km drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
