Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from central London. The town has got a populace of approximately 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize.
