A Saxon encampment followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its plants shut down, though it continues to be a successful and booming town today, largely because of its close proximity to the capital, and the outstanding rail and road communications.
