River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about the first century AD, and the commune which grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 14th C some of the citizens of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its manufacturing plants closed, all the same it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, primarily due to the close proximity to the capital, and the superb road and rail communications.
