The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the commune that grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were accordingly put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, making goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it remains a thriving and booming town today, for the most part because of its close proximity to London, plus the superb road and rail communications.

Chelmsford sits adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
