The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the town which expanded surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many supposed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, producing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into serious decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industry closed, though it remains a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to its nearness to the city of london, plus the first rate rail and road links.
