Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the community that evolved in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous presumed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry shut down, though it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly due to its nearness to the city of london, and its first class rail and road links.
