Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the town which expanded round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into considerable decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its plants went bust, though it remains a thriving and expanding town today, primarily because of its closeness to the capital, and its quality road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
