The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the village which evolved around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were ultimately executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry closed, all the same it continues to be a successful and growing town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the city of london, plus the quality road and rail communications.

The town is situated adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
