Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the settlement that grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its manufacturing plants closed, although it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part due to its closeness to the capital, and its first rate rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is positioned just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
