River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the community that developed in the area of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were subsequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its industry closed down, even so it is still a successful and expanding town today, predominantly because of its closeness to the capital, plus its first class road and rail communications.
