The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.
