Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the community that evolved around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were later put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless assumed witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its plants went bust, but it continues to be a successful and booming town today, largely due to the proximity to London, and its outstanding rail and road connections.
