A Saxon encampment succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the 14th C many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

Through the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its production facilities closed down, even so it remains a successful and expanding town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the terrific road and rail communications.
