The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has a population of some 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the settlement which grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless presumed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, crafting such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, when much of its factories ceased to be profitable, though it still is a successful and developing town today, mostly because of its proximity to the city of london, plus the first class rail and road communications.
