River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the commune which evolved around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main agitators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless presumed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry shut down, though it is still a thriving and developing town today, primarily due to its proximity to the city of london, plus its terrific rail and road links.

The town is found just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 26 kilometres drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
