Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the village which developed surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main culprits were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a serious manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was hit a few times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into significant decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its industry shut down, although it remains a successful and booming town today, primarily due to its close proximity to London, and the first rate rail and road communications.

The town is situated just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 26 km from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
