The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the commune which developed in the vicinity of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless alleged witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the 19th century, producing products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and booming town today, principally due to the closeness to the city of london, and its first class road and rail connections.

The town lies near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
