An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless presumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a considerable industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its industry went bust, even so it remains a successful and booming town today, primarily due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the excellent rail and road communications.
