A Saxon encampment followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading instigators were ultimately executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a considerable industrial town during the 19th C, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its plants shut down, though it remains a thriving and booming town today, largely because of its closeness to the city of london, plus its good rail and road communications.
