The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two mls from central London. The town boasts a population of about 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, crafting such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into considerable decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry closed, even so it remains a thriving and growing town today, primarily because of its close proximity to London, and its terrific rail and road communications.
