The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of some 111,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the town that grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous assumed witches.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, crafting products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit many times.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry shut down, even so it is still a successful and growing town today, primarily due to the proximity to the city of london, and the first rate rail and road links.

Chelmsford is located close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
