River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the encampment that grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the 1980's, since a good deal of its factories shut down, though it still is a thriving and developing town today, principally due to the proximity to the city of london, and the good road and rail links.
