Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into substantial decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry closed down, however it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, for the most part due to its nearness to London, and its first rate road and rail links.
