The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has got a population of about 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the encampment which developed in the vicinity of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were subsequently hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless presumed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into significant decline during the 1980's, since much of its plants closed, though it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to its proximity to London, and the quality road and rail links.
