Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the first century AD, and the town that grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans.
