Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the town which grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading agitators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town during the 19th C, crafting such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry closed, though it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, principally due to the proximity to the city of london, plus its terrific rail and road connections.
