An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the locals of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its production facilities closed down, even so it remains a thriving and growing town today, mainly due to the nearness to the capital, and its superb road and rail links.

The town is found near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
