The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has a populace of about 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the settlement which evolved around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a vital manufacturing town during the 19th C, making goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry shut down, though it is still a thriving and expanding town today, mainly due to the closeness to the capital, and its first class rail and road connections.

The town sits beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
