Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit a few times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its manufacturing facilities ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, mostly because of its closeness to the city of london, and its good road and rail communications.
