The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of around thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 111,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.
