Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the town which evolved round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main agitators were ultimately executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, crafting such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit several times.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industry closed, even so it still is a flourishing and booming town today, mostly due to the proximity to the capital, and its terrific road and rail communications.

The town sits close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six kilometres drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
