The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of about 32 mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the community that grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main agitators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many assumed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a serious manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its industry closed down, even so it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, largely due to the proximity to London, plus its first class road and rail communications.
