The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the town that evolved around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were consequently put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous alleged witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was hit many times.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry closed down, yet it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, for the most part due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus its good road and rail connections.
