The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of about 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

During the 14th century some of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.
