The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a drive of roughly 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a population of roughly 111,500 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the commune that grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town in the 19th century, producing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit several times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to the proximity to the capital, and its quality road and rail connections.

Chelmsford lies adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen mls from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
