The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a populace of around 110,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).
