A Saxon camp followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck many times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its industry shut down, though it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly because of its proximity to the city of london, and its excellent rail and road connections.
