Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).
