The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the commune which grew up in the vicinity of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading culprits were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, when a high percentage of its manufacturers went bust, even so it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, principally because of its close proximity to London, and its outstanding rail and road links.

The town sits just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 16 miles from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
