Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a population of around 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that evolved round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main agitators were later executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry went bust, even so it still is a successful and expanding town today, mainly due to its closeness to the capital, plus its first rate rail and road connections.

The town is found beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
