Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of some 32 mls from central London. The town has got a populace of around 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the commune that developed around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such items as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into substantial decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, although it is still a flourishing and developing town today, largely due to the closeness to London, plus the first class rail and road communications.
