Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the encampment that expanded in the vicinity of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous alleged witches.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a serious manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing such goods as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered considerable decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its manufacturers went bust, though it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, mainly because of its nearness to the capital, plus the quality rail and road communications.
