The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, around 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were consequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many supposed witches.
