Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of around 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous assumed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a serious manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WW2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline during the 1980's, since a high percentage of its industry went bust, though it remains a flourishing and growing town today, largely because of its close proximity to London, plus the superb road and rail communications.

The town is positioned just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around sixteen miles from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
