Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the village which grew up round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading instigators were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous presumed witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, making such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industry closed down, however it remains a flourishing and booming town today, mainly due to the closeness to the capital, and its outstanding road and rail connections.
