Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 111,500 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).
