The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of approximately 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the town which grew up in the area of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless presumed witches.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a serious industrial town in the 19th C, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its industry went bust, nonetheless it remains a thriving and blooming town today, mostly due to its proximity to the city of london, and the terrific road and rail communications.
