The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. The town has a populace of around 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were ultimately executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.
