The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, around 32 mls from central London. The town boasts a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the town that evolved round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a serious manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industries shut down, even so it remains a successful and booming town today, for the most part due to the nearness to London, and its excellent rail and road communications.

Chelmsford stands close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 16 mls from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
