Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from central London. The town boasts a population of about 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the encampment that grew up round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many presumed witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its plants ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a successful and expanding town today, principally due to the closeness to the capital, and the exceptional road and rail links.

The town is set just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
