Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the town that expanded around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it remains a thriving and booming town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the city of london, and the outstanding rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is located near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
