Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly thirty two miles from central London. The town boasts a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the settlement which grew up in the vicinity of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main instigators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry closed down, though it remains a thriving and growing town today, primarily due to its closeness to London, and its terrific road and rail connections.
