The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of roughly 111,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the community which developed in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many assumed witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through serious decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its manufacturing plants shut down, though it still is a flourishing and booming town today, primarily due to the nearness to the city of london, plus the superb rail and road links.

The town is set adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
