The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the settlement which evolved around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the occupants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous supposed witches.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industries went bust, though it still is a successful and expanding town today, largely due to the proximity to London, plus its superb road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is found just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital.
