The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in about the 1st century AD, and the town which developed surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, making products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit a few times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industry closed, though it remains a successful and developing town today, largely due to its close proximity to London, and the outstanding road and rail connections.

The town stands adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
