Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of some 111,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the town which evolved in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many assumed witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry closed, though it still is a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly because of its proximity to the capital, plus the first class road and rail communications.

Chelmsford stands just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
