An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town during the 19th century, making products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industries closed down, though it remains a flourishing and developing town today, mostly due to its nearness to London, and its superb rail and road communications.
