The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of roughly thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of approximately 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the commune that expanded in the area of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, but it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, primarily because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the superb rail and road connections.

The town is located just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six km drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
