The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a populace of roughly 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

A Saxon community followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were accordingly executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.
