The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the town which developed surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, crafting products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit many times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the 1980's, since a good deal of its factories closed, nevertheless it remains a thriving and booming town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to London, and the quality rail and road links.
