Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of approximately thirty two mls from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of around 111,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the settlement that grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were later executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, crafting such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its industry went bust, even so it remains a successful and blooming town today, primarily due to the closeness to the city of london, and the excellent rail and road communications.

Chelmsford sits beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
