A Saxon settlement followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many supposed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, yet it still is a successful and booming town today, primarily due to the nearness to the capital, plus its quality road and rail connections.
