Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of approximately 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly 111,500 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the commune which grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit several times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its production facilities closed, yet it remains a flourishing and growing town today, primarily because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the exceptional rail and road connections.

The town is positioned beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
