The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the town which developed in the vicinity of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were ultimately put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many suspected witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry went bust, even so it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, primarily due to the closeness to the city of london, plus the terrific road and rail communications.

The town is set adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 26 km car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
