The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a populace of roughly 111,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the village that grew up around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its manufacturing facilities went bust, even so it still is a successful and developing town today, principally due to its nearness to the city of london, and its excellent rail and road communications.
