The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, around thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the village which developed in the locality of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were later put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous presumed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its industrial facilities closed, yet it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, largely due to the nearness to the city of london, plus the superb road and rail connections.

The town sits near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
