Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of around 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has a populace of some 111,500 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the community that grew up in the area of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading culprits were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many supposed witches.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered serious decline in the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its manufacturing plants closed, even so it remains a thriving and expanding town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to the capital, and its good rail and road links.

The town stands just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
