Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were accordingly hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless presumed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, mostly due to its nearness to the capital, and the good road and rail communications.

The town can be found just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital.
