River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the town which evolved round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the citizens of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were later put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a considerable industrial town in the 19th C, crafting goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its manufacturing plants closed, even so it is still a successful and growing town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the first class road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is set close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 16 miles drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
