Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main agitators were ultimately executed in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline during the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its industry closed down, all the same it still is a successful and blooming town today, mainly due to the close proximity to London, plus its first rate rail and road links.
