The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, around 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of about 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the encampment which grew up in the area of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit many times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry ceased to be profitable, all the same it remains a flourishing and developing town today, mostly because of its closeness to the capital, plus the outstanding rail and road links.

The town is located beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
