The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the village that grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading instigators were ultimately executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous assumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its plants went bust, even so it still is a thriving and booming town today, principally because of its proximity to the city of london, plus its exceptional road and rail communications.

The town can be found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
