Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately 111,500 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the settlement that grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the occupants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous presumed witches.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its plants closed down, even so it remains a thriving and developing town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the capital, and its outstanding road and rail communications.

The town can be found near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
