Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of around 111,500 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the village which expanded around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were consequently executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless suspected witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry went bust, though it is still a thriving and blooming town today, mostly because of its proximity to the city of london, and its superb road and rail connections.

The town is found beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 26 km from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
