Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the community which grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it remains a successful and growing town today, primarily due to the closeness to the capital, and the first class road and rail links.

The town is located near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 26 km from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
