The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the town that grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main culprits were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless suspected witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry shut down, even so it is still a successful and expanding town today, mainly due to its closeness to London, plus its good road and rail links.

Chelmsford stands beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
