River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a considerable industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing products such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry closed down, in spite of this it remains a thriving and booming town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to the city of london, and its first class rail and road communications.
