The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the encampment which developed around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the residents of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main instigators were ultimately put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th century, producing goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck several times.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline in the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, principally because of its closeness to the city of london, and the terrific road and rail connections.

The town is situated just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 26 km from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
