The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the inhabitants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit many times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its manufacturing plants closed, though it still is a successful and expanding town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the city of london, plus its outstanding rail and road links.
