The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has a populace of around 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

A Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck a number of times.
