Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the town that grew up in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the occupants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading culprits were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless suspected witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, making products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through considerable decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industry went bust, but it still is a flourishing and blooming town today, principally because of its proximity to London, and its exceptional rail and road links.

The town is situated just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
