Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless suspected witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town during the 19th century, making such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industry shut down, though it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly due to its closeness to the capital, plus the excellent rail and road links.
