The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.
